The easy guide to plastic recycling symbols

Look around you - from cars to toys to packaging to clothing – we sure do love our plastic! But every plastic container will have a recycling symbol, a number from 1 – 7 within a triangle (behold, the resin identification system). But why should these numbers be important to you?

All those years ago, the identification system was created to help recyclers sort and separate items according to their resin type but is now also used in curbside communities and various other recycling programs. If you know what each symbol means, you can make better choices when it comes to recycling your plastic waste.

Remember, just because it has this symbol, doesn't necessarily mean that it is collected for recycling. It's always best to check with your collection program which plastics they do or do not include.
